John Alonzo Johnston married MELISSA FLANINGAM 01 January 1868 in Darlington, Montgomery Co., IN, daughter of ARCHIBALD FLANINGAM and CATHERINE KARSHNER. She was born 06 December 1848 in Darlington, Montgomery Co., Indiana, and died 18 September 1903 in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana.
John Alonzo Johnston, son of Archibald and Sarah Keller Johnston was born near Greencastle, Indiana on October 9, 1846. He was the eldest of nine children and as a boy worked on the farm with his father. He had a desire to pursue the Christian Ministry being a member of the Chistian Church and attended Asbury Seminary. On January 1, 1868 he married Mary Melissa Flaningam and they had seven children. James Garfield Johnston was the youngest son.
Mary Melissa Johnston, daughter of Archibald and Catherine Kashner Flaningam, was born December 6, 1848 on a farm near Darlington, Indiana. She was the eldest of twelve children. She died in Indianapolis, September 18, 1903.
At the age of sixteen the family moved to Darlington, Indiana where Mr Johnston attended the elementary schools and the Darlington Academy. At the age of 30 John entered the ministry and for forty years continued as a minister. He was the first minister sent out by the Disciples of Christ Church to do home missionary work when it was first begun in Indiana.
During his ministry as a district missionary of the state he organized new churches and helped to build up weak churches within central and southern Indiana. Mr Johnston helped pastors at Whiteville, New Market, Fincastle, Dover, Thorntown and Lebanon and many others. One pastoral Mr Johnston held for fourteen years and one of the last positions he filled was as pastor of the Christian Church of Lebanon, Indiana.
Mr Johnston spent two years with his son in Aurora, Nebraska and even in his declining years he continued to be a minister.
Mr Johnston died on Saturday, October 25, 1930 in the Sines Sanitarium in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana.
