Benjamin Jefferson Southard is the gg-grandson of James Southard. James Southard was born August 16, 1814 in Surry County, North Carolina. He died September 14 1865 in Hancock Co., Indiana. James is buried in Olvey Cemetery in Hancock Co., Indiana near Greenfield.

James Southard received a patent deed from the US government for 40 acres dated March 20, 1831 which describes him as being from Wayne Co. In. The deed was recorded Nov 30, 1841 in Hancock County In. In 1851 he bought 3.5 acres from Matthew McKinney on Greenfield and Noblesville State Road. In 1856 he bought forty acres from Ezekiel Rogers which extended his first patent.

He married Feb 28, 1836 in Hancock Co. In to Winifred Thomas (1815-1888), the daughter of William and Sarah Thomas. James died Sept 14, 1869 in Hancock County and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, at the intersection of IN State Road 850N and Olvey Rd in Green Township, Hancock Co., IN. or as commonly known today as Olvey Cemetery. Winifred Southard widow of James married again July 20, 1873 to Thomas Martin his second wife. Three of Thomas Martin's children by his first marriage married Benjamin, Sarah and Henry Southard the first three children of James and Winifred Southard. James was the son of Job and Morning Snow Southard from Surry Co., North Carolina.
